Are you having difficulties sleeping? You’ve gone ahead to try every tip and trick you can click on Google, but to no avail. You’re now on your bed, feeling restless, but your eyes are still wide awake at 2:00 am.
It’s a hassle, especially when you feel your mood deteriorating and not having enough energy. And to be awake alone at night? That’s boring! Wouldn’t it be great to have the plants accompanying you?
Well, speaking of plants, do you know that there are plants that can help you to sleep? No? Take this as your lucky day then, because I will show you 6 of them!
1/ Aloe Vera
Not just good for the skin, but for the eyes too. Source: The Spruce
You probably know this plant if you were there during the hype of the Soothing Moisture Aloe Vera Gel by Nature Republic. Malaysia and its hot weather never seem to sit right with my sensitive skin, so Aloe Vera always helps relieve my sunburn.
Let’s not forget the frequent times I bought those aloe vera drinks after school to soothe my dry throat. And not just that, I didn’t know that they would help with sleeping problems too! It releases a lot of oxygen at night, at the same time removing benzene and formaldehyde. This allows you to breathe better when you sleep.
2/ Jasmine (Jasminum)
I remember how I would eat the flower when I was young. Good thing it’s edible. Source: Garden Lovers Club
Ah, Jasmine. I’m not shocked if it is included in the list, as their delightful scent seems to always be found in perfume and candles. In addition, Jasmine can help reduce anxiety, which leads you to having a more peaceful sleep.
And as the night passes, your mental performance will gradually improve! I love the white colour, which is why I’m a sucker for Jasmine. Not only does it have a lovely scent, but it also looks gorgeous on my window too.
But if your sleeping problem doesn’t improve, and the scent becomes stronger each night, then it’s probably time for you to throw the plant away, if you know what I mean.
3/ English Ivy (Hedera Helix)
Does that mean there’s a Malay Ivy too? Source: Stacked Homes
Start noticing dampness in your bedroom? Buy an English Ivy instead of using your money to buy a dehumidifier. It has been reported that the plant can combat some health issues, such as poor respiration.
There are, of course, other reasons why you should buy this plant as well. It is also good for collecting airborne mould, preventing you from absorbing contaminated air and getting sick. Not to forget, it is a big help in alleviating asthma symptoms.
You won’t just sleep with good health in mind, but a peaceful one too! Though, the con is that it’s toxic. As long as you keep it out of reach from your pets and babies, everyone will be safe.
4/ Lavender (Lavandula)
A mini-lavender, my dream has finally come true! Source: Smart Garden Guide
Though it’s challenging to take care of Lavender, that doesn’t compare to its benefits. It has been stated that Lavender can reduce blood pressure and heart rate, making it useful for those struggling with anxiety. And you will finally be able to have that restful sleep.
Have you ever wondered why Lavender has always been the usual ingredient to make essential oil, lotion, candles, and more? Some even tuck a Lavender-scented sachet under their pillow and drawer as well.
Its relaxing scent can even lower stress levels. And in fact, a study showed that it can also reduce infants’ crying, which indirectly helps moms out there get better sleep. Less crying, less stress, you know?
5/ Golden Photos (Epipremnum Aureum)
Don’t judge a book by its cover. Though it’s toxic, the plant sure is helpful. Source: The Sill
This low-maintenance plant is a good choice to help you sleep. It would be a suitable plant for a forgetful and low commitment person such as myself. Because they do not need much light or water, they are hard to kill and easy to care for.
And how does it help one to sleep, you ask? The plant is excellent at purifying the air, removing toxins such as carbon monoxide and formaldehyde. This also makes them one of the top air-purifying plants from the NASA clean air study!
6/ Gerbera Daisy (Gerbera Jamesonii)
Fun fact: Daisies belong to one of the largest families of plants in the world. Source: Garden Gate Magazine
This plant would be an excellent option to put in your room! As one of your sleep remedies, and as a decoration. Who wouldn’t want such a bright-coloured plant in their room? It’s not just beautiful but will add up the happiness in your life.
And just like the other plants, they provide several benefits to your bedroom, such as increasing the supply of fresh and clean oxygen at night. Thanks to them being a fantastic air-purifier, they are also a great help to those suffering from allergies and sleep apnea.
A little word of caution. Compared to the Golden Photos, Daisies are high maintenance plants. They need bright light, and the soil should be thoroughly soaked each time you water them.
Yeay! A new roomie
You’re slowly a step away from those sleepless nights! The only thing you have to do now is to choose the plant that is aligned with your problems and which is suitable for you to take care of.
Plants need love too, you know? Like bringing in a roommate, both you and the plant have to work things out and take care of each other.
Your mental health will improve as you both thrive together in the future! Isn’t that cute?
We hope this will be a definite solution to your problem. It’ll probably take some time. But hey, slowly, but surely. We are sure you’ll be getting your beauty sleep in no time.
