How are you prepping for Valentine’s Day? I can’t wait for the day to come!
Now don’t get all sour with me for being excited about it. Once upon a time, I despised Valentine’s Day; watching all the couples getting cute and cuddly while I’m just having another regular day (okay, I of course, was jealous and feeling sorry for myself). But one day, it hit me that Valentine’s doesn’t even have anything to do with being in a romantic relationship.
Since then, I’ve dedicated this day to myself! It’s a day about love, so I taught myself to not be a ball of negative energy on such a lovely day.
Let me share with you on how to have the best day with yourself on Valentine’s this year and in the years to come.
1/ Write a note to yourself
Grab a pen and a paper (or a few) and write a sincere note to yourself! I like doing this prior to Valentine’s because
- Opening it days later would make you feel like you’re talking to your past self which is so cute.
- You can choose a vulnerable time to write it so that it’ll be a heartfelt message to your future self.
You might be thinking, “what am I gonna say to myself?”. Anything you want! I say things like “I hope that you finally had the movie night you’ve been wanting for 3 months now” or I remind myself of a funny incident like “remember when bald head guy sneezed?”; doesn’t make sense, does it? Well, that’s the best part. You don’t have to explain yourself, to yourself. This is what makes writing to yourself so therapeutic and fun! Writing a note listing the reasons why you love yourself, or some nice gestures you’ve done is also great. It’s a delightful reminder to yourself that you’re amazing, and you don’t need anyone else to validate that.

2/ Go on a pampering date with yourself
This may sound sad at first but trust me it feels so good. The first time I went on a date with myself, I remember watching “Six Feet Apart” in a theatre surrounded by couples on Valentine’s Day (you can just imagine how that was). I’m human too, so yes, it was annoying at first. But as I got used to the idea, I regretted not doing this sooner! Now, I make it a point to go on a solo date at least once a month just to treat myself for getting through my challenges.
Give yourself the chance to indulge in anything that you deserve. Go get that amazing body massage you’ve been longing for, or maybe try a new look and get your hair done. It can be anything as long as it makes you happy and gives you a break from your daily stresses.

3/ Reflect and pay attention to your thoughts
You usually wouldn’t hear about this, but simply taking a moment to reflect and pay attention to your thoughts can take you a long way in strengthening your relationship with yourself. Having a good relationship with yourself is crucial because at the end of the day, you kinda only have yourself when all else goes south. You gotta be your own #1 fan.
Meditating helps a ton with this! Taking deep breaths in a quiet space, and letting your worries and the chaos in your mind drift away while you check in with your inner child can be refreshing for you mentally and emotionally.
Now, I totally understand that meditation is not always an easy task. Some of us may get more anxious when it’s way too quiet (I feel you). So, what I do to reconnect with myself is talk to myself in the mirror. I swear it’s not crazy. You can pretend to be a YouTuber talking to a camera in front of you or pretend that you’re talking to a second person in the mirror, the maskless, raw version of you.
This step is a great way to know what you truly want or need in your life, especially if you feel stuck or lost in your current situation. It’ll also give you a clearer understanding of what you need to do next.

4/ Watch or do something that makes you laugh
Have you ever heard of laughter therapy? It’s known to be one of the best natural therapies as laughing gets the happy hormones rushing in your body.
The fact that comedy is subjective is great for this step as you can watch or do whatever that tickles your funny bone.
Some great comedic shows that you can watch on Netflix are “Brooklyn 9-9″, “That 90’s Show” and “The Big Bang Theory”. If you’re more of a YouTube person, then you can check out funny video compilations by “America’s Funniest Home Videos” or by other various YouTubers. I personally love watching gamer YouTubers playing horror games, especially CoryxKenshin. He’s hilarious!
Gone are the sulky days of Valentine’s. Let’s get the lovee goin!
