1/ Smells like bell-bottoms and disco’s

Suppose you haven’t guessed it by now. In that case, we are talking about the decade everyone was singing along to Memory motel and Brown Sugar by The Rolling Stones, fighting for movie seats to watch The Godfather, and of course, the infamous inflation.

They were also the years of wall-to-wall shag carpeting, funky coloured furniture and psychedelic floral patterns. Of course, the design elements are much more subtle now, but if you feel a bit nostalgic, here are some ways to reintroduce some retro vibes into your modern home.

Where saffron is the new black, don’t be afraid to use bold choices of colour; for example, you can incorporate subtle shades of burnt orange, moss greens and other warm neutrals to create the perfect theme. You can look for these pops of colour and patterns at your local antique store, or if you are feeling a bit more adventurous, reupholster your own vintage couch!

2/ Be one with nature!

We humbly welcome you to the humble and fulfilling world of plants, where it all starts with one cactus and ends up in an indoor jungle! And if we are fair, we are yet to meet any plant parent who has ever complained about having too many plants. In fact, there can never be enough!

And while we are on the subject, you can go for a nature-inspired design by bringing some lush greens into your home that will not only filter your air but also brighten up your home. Not only do they complement every design style, but they also bring deep feelings of contentment and joy from seeing your babies bloom.

3/ Multifunctional spaces

If there is anything that 2021 has taught us, single-purpose areas are now a complete no-no. After being stuck at home for months at a time, the last thing you want is for your home to not accommodate your varying lifestyles (work, exercise and leisure).

With the upcoming architectural advancements and designs, we anticipate interior designs with multifunctional purposes that will utilise every inch of your home to ensure every part is functional. Investing in dual-purpose furniture is a great way to create multifunctional spaces. For example, your next coffee table can also serve as storage. If you don’t have the space to expand your closet, you can invest in a beautiful hand-painted bedroom divider or screen.

4/ Minimalism remains King.

From having clean, clutter-free, monochromatic spaces, minimalist spaces continue to win the favour of multitudes for their unique ability to make one feel welcome and at home by creating a visual sense of calmness. They do run the risk of looking ‘cold and soulless’ at times which is why you should add small touches of warmth and pops of colour to brighten up the room.

When minimalism is done right, it enhances the comfortability of a place even without having many elements in sight. To achieve this stunning simplistic look, you should consider adding wood tones, steel and limiting the number of ornaments you use in the room. Trust me, and once you go minimal, you can never go back!

5/ Practical working spaces.

It only took me two hours into working from home when I realised exactly why beds are not considered replacements for office chairs, so naturally, I moved to the dining area, but my back pains also said no. To say it has been frustrating is another understatement, and that’s how we know that home office spaces are most definitely going to be a thing in 2022 and probably the years to follow.

To create the perfect home office, consider using previously unused spaces, for example, a nook or abandoned closet. Depending on the measurements, you can see that you have a desk and chair that fit perfectly without overcrowding the place. Your best bet for the visual aesthetic is adding accent walls, natural lights, soft and warm colours, and wire organisers. You can also install a built-in bookshelf and lots of plants because why not!
