As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the savanna in hues of gold and crimson, the distant sound of drums began to echo through the fields. It was a sound I had heard countless times before a deep, rhythmic pulse that seemed to rise from the earth itself. At that moment, I knew: Maribantang was calling.

Dankunku, a small village in Gambia with around 2,000 residents, is a place where every moment feels alive. Surrounded by rich, green landscapes, it’s a community where people genuinely care for one another. The village thrives on agriculture, with most locals farming crops like millet, sorghum, and groundnuts, and raising livestock. Strong family ties and a deep respect for traditions define this close-knit community.

Growing up in Dankunku, I felt truly at home, surrounded by friends and a supportive community. At 12, I left for the city to pursue a better education, but as I grew older, I realised how special Dankunku truly is. It’s where I was free to be myself, and where the warmth of community life left a lasting impact on me.

One memory that always stays with me is the Maribantang festival. This vibrant celebration is a heartfelt tribute to our ancestors and a way to honour their legacy. The festival, filled with music, dance, and traditional foods, reinforces our cultural values and brings the community together. Even now, the sounds and colours of the Maribantang festival remind me of my deep connection to Dankunku—a place where I will always feel at home.

Celebrating the Heartbeat of Dankunku

The Maribantang festival is the heartbeat of Dankunku, reflecting the spirit of our village. As the dry season settles in and the harvest is safely stored, our community comes alive with a celebration rooted in our ancestors’ traditions. The vibrant beats of the drums invite us to dance, connect, and honour our shared heritage. Each year, the festival weaves a rich tapestry of tradition and unity, defining who we are.

I still remember the first time I truly felt the festival’s magic. At 10, I was finally allowed to join the “Dundunba” dance. Watching it my whole life, I understood it wasn’t just about the steps but about our story, our connection to the past, and our community’s unity. An elder told me, “This dance isn’t just movement; it’s our past, present, and future coming together.”

When the drums began, their steady rhythm felt like the heartbeat of Dankunku, guiding me through each step. Surrounded by family and friends, I felt both nervous and excited, but above all, a deep connection to my roots. Each step was like a conversation with ancestors; each turned into a link in the chain that bound us together. The pride in my parent’s eyes and the cheers of the crowd made me feel part of something greater.

The festival bursts to life with vibrant dances and music, and the scents of “benachin” (a one-pot rice dish), “nyebbeh” (bean stew), and “domoda” (peanut stew) cooking truly capture its essence. These aromas bring back cherished memories of shared meals and laughter, celebrating our land’s bounty and uniting us. They remind us that our culture is deeply rooted in the traditions we uphold and the connections we cherish.

What I cherish most about the Maribantang festival is its power to unite people. It’s a time for family reunions, reconnecting with friends, and feeling like one big family. The joy, the shared stories, and the pride in our heritage make each festival unforgettable. It reinforces the values that bind us and deepens the relationships that make our village feel like home.

The festival reminds me that home is not merely a location but a feeling woven from the people we love, the traditions we hold dear, and the memories we create. Each drumbeat draws me back to Dankunku, where my heart finds its rhythm, and my spirit feels anchored. No matter where life leads me, the essence of this place and its festival will always resonate within me, defining what it means to belong truly.

A Lifelong Guide

Maribantang taught me that our traditions are not just rituals; they are living, breathing parts of us. They shape our identity, our values, and our place in the world. Every time I hear the drumbeats of the Dundunba, whether in memory or in reality, I am transported back to those moments of joy, fear, and ultimately, belonging. The festival is more than just a celebration; it is a reminder of the enduring power of tradition and the importance of honouring our roots.

Maribantang is more than a festival; it is a living memory that continues to shape my life. It taught me that to understand where we are going, we must first remember where we come from. The dances, the music, the stories—they are all threads that weave the fabric of our identity, guiding us as we navigate the complexities of life. For me, Maribantang is not just a celebration; it is a profound reminder of the enduring connection between past and present, and the unspoken promise that our traditions will always light our way.
