We often think of Paris as a destination for shopping, indulging in croissants at a bakery, and visiting the Eiffel Tower. But Paris offers so much more. Are you tired of the same old tourist routines?
If you’re yearning for a deeper, more genuine experience that goes beyond the usual tourist spots, then you’re in for a treat.
In this article, I’ve handpicked my top 5 hidden gem activities that will turn your visit to Paris into an authentic Parisian adventure.
Say goodbye to the crowds and clichés, and get ready to discover the city’s best-kept secrets. From charming hidden gardens to quaint local markets, I’ll guide you in uncovering the true essence of Paris without breaking the bank or falling into tourist traps.
1/ Parisian Markets

When I explore a new country, my first stop is always the local market. It’s a great way to support small businesses and immerse myself in the local culture.
I recommend you do the same when you’re in a new place. Forget about big supermarkets and malls (though you can always check them out later, humans are adaptable, after all), instead, head straight to the market.
In Paris, you’re in for a treat. With France’s thriving agriculture industry, you’ll find plenty of markets around the city offering everything from juicy local strawberries to authentic French cheese. And since the French have a soft spot for all things vintage, Parisian markets are the perfect place to hunt for treasures and unique home decorations.
I highly recommend checking out:
- The Marché aux Puces de St-Ouen, one of Europe’s largest flea markets. Here, you’ll discover vintage cameras, furniture, and one-of-a-kind fashion pieces.
- The Marché Mouffetard, where you can indulge in local delicacies like escargots (a must-try!), charcuterie, pâtés, seafood, cheeses, and tempting pastries. Plus, you’ll find a vibrant array of fresh fruits and vegetables.
2/ Pottery Adventure

Check out a pottery studio in Paris! Pottery is super cool because you can let your creativity loose.
I got into pottery after seeing content about it on TikTok and Instagram. So when a friend said, “Let’s go to a pottery studio” I was all in. And you know what? It was awesome.
Pottery is different from anything else. It’s peaceful because you focus on making something with your hands. Plus, it’s fun to see what you can create and also fun to see yourself fail.
So, I highly recommend checking out Clay Atelier Paris rue Saint-Maur, the pottery haven in Paris. It’s an experience you won’t forget!
3/ Parisian Literary Escapade

If you’re a book lover, you’ve got to explore Paris’s bookshops. The city’s known for its awesome book spots, so don’t miss out. There’s something for everyone.
Whether you’re into old books or want something unique and fascinating, Paris has it all.
One spot you shouldn’t miss is Shakespeare and Company bookstore at 37 Rue de la Bucherie in the 5th arrondissement. They’ve got a bunch of antiquarian books there, unique things that you will not find anywhere else. I went there with friends and found some rare books, like “Arabian Sands” by Wilfred Thesiger, a book I’ve always wanted to read, but it’s pretty pricey, around 150€ if you buy it there.
If you are a book lover, you will really enjoy this place. You can also find a bunch of merchandise and gifts if you want something unique from Paris instead of just an “I love Paris” t-shirt.
Ah I would’ve forgotten! It’s best to go early or late to avoid the crowds, since it’s really popular with locals who love it.
4/ Visit the Monnet House

Getting caught up in the hustle of a busy city can drain you, especially when you’re craving a taste of authentic French charm. But don’t worry! Take a break and head to Claude Monet’s house, a mere hour’s drive from Paris.
This peaceful retreat offers an exclusive peek into the world of a legendary artist. Surrounded by stunning countryside views and the elegant Château, you’ll soak up the essence of French elegance.
Trust me, it’s an adventure worth every moment!
5/ French Cuisine course
Time to roll up your sleeves and learn to cook some French cuisine! Photo source : Tripadvisor
What could be more authentic than learning to make the famous Boeuf Bourguignon à la française or crafting a crispy baguette and golden croissants like a true French baker?
That’s why I highly recommend booking a cooking class at La Cuisine Paris, located near the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral. This unique experience will not only teach you the art of baking but also immerse you fully in French culture.
Picture yourself kneading bread dough while listening to the expert advice of local chefs, and then savoring your freshly baked creations. It’s an invaluable opportunity to uncover the secrets of French cuisine and take home impressive culinary skills, along with unforgettable memories of your time in Paris.
